Telemetry Import

Learn how to import telemetry data from Garage61 and other sources into Braking Lab.

Braking Lab uses real telemetry data to create accurate, track-specific exercises. This guide covers how to import your telemetry data from various sources.

Supported Sources

Garage61

Garage61 is the primary telemetry source for Braking Lab. It automatically captures your iRacing sessions and provides detailed lap data.

Why Garage61?

  • Automatic session capture from iRacing
  • Detailed brake, throttle, and steering telemetry
  • Corner-by-corner analysis
  • Cloud storage for all your sessions

How to Connect Garage61

  1. Create a Garage61 account at garage61.net if you haven’t already
  2. Run some iRacing sessions to populate your telemetry library
  3. In Braking Lab, go to Settings > Telemetry Sources
  4. Click “Connect Garage61” and authorize access
  5. Select the sessions you want to import

Importing Sessions

Automatic Import

Once connected, Braking Lab can automatically import new sessions:

  1. Go to Settings > Telemetry Sources
  2. Enable Auto-import new sessions
  3. Choose your import preferences:
    • Import all sessions
    • Only import qualifying/practice sessions
    • Only import sessions for selected series

Manual Import

To import specific sessions manually:

  1. Go to the Import page from the main menu
  2. Click Import from Garage61
  3. Browse your available sessions
  4. Select the sessions you want to import
  5. Click Import Selected

Import Status

The import process extracts braking zones from your telemetry:

StatusDescription
PendingQueued for processing
ProcessingAnalyzing lap data and extracting braking zones
CompleteReady to use in exercises
FailedError during import (check details for reason)

Understanding Imported Data

What Gets Imported

For each session, Braking Lab extracts:

  • Track information - Name, configuration, length
  • Car information - Model, setup context
  • Lap data - Individual laps with timestamps
  • Braking zones - Start/end points, pressure curves, duration
  • Speed profiles - Entry and exit speeds for each corner

Braking Zone Detection

The automatic braking zone detection algorithm identifies:

  1. Brake application start - When pressure exceeds threshold
  2. Peak pressure point - Maximum brake pressure
  3. Trail braking phase - Gradual pressure release
  4. Brake release - When pressure drops below threshold

Each detected zone includes:

  • Zone duration
  • Entry and exit speeds
  • Peak pressure value
  • Trail braking characteristics

Trail Braking Score

Each braking zone receives a trail braking score (0-100):

ComponentWeightWhat It Measures
Release Smoothness70%How gradually you release the brake
Peak Hold Duration30%How well you maintain initial pressure

Higher scores indicate better trail braking technique.

Track Map Visualization

After importing, view your lap on the track map:

  1. Open the imported lap
  2. Click View on Map
  3. See your racing line overlaid on the track
  4. Braking zones highlighted
  5. Click any zone to see details

See Track Maps for more map features.

Reference Lap Selection

After importing, you’ll choose which lap to use as your reference:

  • Fastest lap - Use your quickest lap as the target
  • Most consistent lap - Average of your cleanest laps
  • Specific lap - Manually select a particular lap
  • External reference - Use data shared by other drivers

Data Management

Managing Your Laps

After importing, manage your laps in the My Laps section:

  • View all imported laps in a gallery
  • Filter by track, car, or series
  • Generate exercises from any braking zone
  • Delete laps you no longer need

For complete lap management features, see My Laps.

Organizing Sessions

Keep your telemetry library organized:

  • Favorite sessions - Star important sessions for quick access
  • Tags - Add custom tags to categorize sessions
  • Archive - Move old sessions out of active view
  • Delete - Permanently remove sessions you no longer need

Storage

Your imported telemetry data is stored:

  • Locally in your browser’s storage for offline access
  • In the cloud (if signed in) for sync across devices

Privacy

Your telemetry data belongs to you:

  • Data is only used to generate your exercises
  • Sessions are not shared with other users unless you explicitly share them
  • You can export or delete your data at any time

Troubleshooting

Import Fails

If an import fails, check:

  1. Session has lap data - The session needs completed laps
  2. Garage61 connection - Reconnect if authorization expired
  3. Supported track - Some tracks may not be fully supported yet

Missing Braking Zones

If braking zones aren’t detected:

  • Ensure the lap was completed without significant off-tracks
  • Check that brake input was recorded in the telemetry
  • Try selecting a different reference lap

Sync Issues

If sessions aren’t syncing:

  1. Check your internet connection
  2. Sign out and sign back in
  3. Try manual import for specific sessions
