AboutDaytona Rallycross and Dirt Road
Known as “The World Center of Racing,” Daytona International Speedway boasts many of the top events in American motorsport, from the Daytona 500 on its daunting 2.5-mile oval, to the 24 Hours of Daytona on its iconic 3.56-mile road course, to the Daytona 200 on a modified road course of its own. But long before “dirt to Daytona” was the title of a video game, the track was bringing dirt in by the truckload each spring for a Supercross event within its tri-oval, and in 2014, the track added dirt to its schedule yet again with the addition of Red Bull Global Rallycross.
Only two drivers ever took more than one rallycross win at Daytona: Tanner Foust in Supercars, and Oliver Eriksson in GRC Lites. Each of GRC’s visits to Daytona saw a different track layout based out of the International Horseshoe, with the 2016 version (known on iRacing as the Short layout) the shortest and fastest of all. It did away with the double dirt hairpins that caused so much carnage in the track’s first two years. The Long layout extends the real-world course to provide more passing opportunities.
